Dark Web Hackers Keep Thriving

The darkest parts of the internet have always been shady and dangerous to navigate. According to reports, hackers are stealing crypto accounts to sell them for the lowest price of $30 each.

On April 24, Privacy Affairs, an online data security provider, released an article titled "The Dark Web Price Index," which breaks down what cybercriminals have been able to fraudulently sell on the dark web, both goods and services, for profit.

Some of the cryptocurrency accounts that hackers have managed to sell include:

  • Kraken accounts for over $1,100
  • Binance accounts for $400
  • Crypto.com accounts for $300
  • Coinbase accounts for over $250
  • U.S.-verified Bittrex accounts for as low as $30

According to last year's edition of the Dark Web Price Index, the prices of the same accounts were significantly lower than this year's edition. To have a better understanding, Kraken and Binance accounts were sold for only $260 and $250, respectively, in 2022.

Although cryptocurrency accounts are one of the highest-selling products sold on the dark web, tons of other products get stolen to be sold. The list goes on and on with bank accounts, social media accounts, service accounts (Netflix, Spotify, Bet365, etc.), and documents (driver's licenses, passports, etc.), among many other products and services. The following are just a few:

  • ING bank account logins sold for over $4,000
  • Passports from various European countries go for $1,700 - $4,000
  • Hacked Gmail accounts for $60
  • Credit cards details for $100

A security researcher for Privacy Affairs, Miklos Zoltan, commented on the new values "If someone gets their hands on your financial details or social media credentials, the prices mentioned above are basically what it's worth to them. There's a good chance that you value these things much more than they do; to them, you're just another mark for a quick buck."

In today's world, there is more concern over our personal information on the internet than ever before. Even though security in crypto exchanges has developed and improved to stop cyber-attacks, cybercriminals always find a way to hack the system.
