South Korea has opened an online metaverse for Seoul to provide public services
The Seoul Metropolitan Government has launched its own metaverse project, which will open up the chances for residents to access public services.
In an attempt to improve the city’s public services, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon has announced the initial stage of their metaverse. This first stage encourages residents of Seoul to use their avatars to ask tax questions, access youth counseling, find support for small businesses, and read e-books.
The project is estimated to be completed by the year 2026, with the second stage set to be launched in 2024. According to the mayor, the virtual world will be a “place of communication for citizens.” The final version of the metaverse is expected to have real estate opportunities, foreign investor services, augmented reality, and blockchain technologies. Seoul residents will be allowed to visit attractions, access official documents, and file complaints, among many other activities and services.
In 2022, the Korean government announced its plan to invest 200 million USD into its metaverse ecosystem, new technologies, and education with the intention of creating more than 2 million new jobs. The first phase of the Seoul Metaverse cost the government 1.6 million USD, according to the city’s government.
